I can remember it clearly; logging onto the OUAC website and hovering over my options, all while studying for my grade 12 exams.

There are so many universities and programs to choose from, which can make it difficult to narrow down your options. So let me tell you about some of the reasons that led me to choose Ontario Tech:

1. Program offerings

The Biological Science program caught my attention because of the different specializations available. I knew I wanted to do something in biology, but was still looking to keep my options open.

I initially started in the Applied Biotechnology specialization but switched to Environmental Biology in my second year when my interests changed. It was easy to make the switch because the first two years have the same foundational courses before the diverge.

2. Location

My parents live about 45 minutes away from Ontario Tech, which was perfect for me because it made the commute so much easier while I was living at home.

There are GO buses that go straight to the north Oshawa campus and downtown Oshawa campus, plus, a universal bus pass for Durham Transit is included in your tuition—so don't be afraid to take advantage of it! 

3. New campus

When considering universities, I really liked the idea of attending a modern campus. Even though Ontario Tech is now 20 years old, it's still considered new in terms of a university. Plus, our newest building has been recognized for all its beauty!

4. Housing options

There are very communal and homey residential buildings on-campus available to you as a Ridgeback. There are plenty of fun activities like ping pong tables and game rooms in the residential halls you can take advantage of. There are even residence communities dedicated to engineering students, so you can live and learn surrounded by your engineering peers.

Once I was ready to move out, I chose to live in the new off-campus housing units built across from the north campus. I lived with five roommates in a nice townhouse, only five minutes away from campus; which made my morning classes much more manageable!

Oshawa is quickly becoming a hot spot for student housing projects; every year there are new places opening for rent to students, like the University Studios by Varsity Communities. 

Take-away message

Deciding what university to attend is a big decision that should be given lots of thought. For me, the various specialization options, new campus and close proximity to home were some of the many reasons why I picked Ontario Tech.

Be sure to research the universities you're interested in to make sure they have the things that are important to you and your learning experience—I wouldn't be surprised if Ontario Tech has everything you are looking for and more!
