Program Insider: Marketing

Rachel Plancke

Hello! My name is Rachel and I am a fourth-year Business student majoring in Marketing. Narrowing down your options to the program you want to pursue can be difficult, so I'm here to give you an insider’s perspective on the marketing program.

When thinking of marketing, most people think of advertising. However, marketing is so much more than simple advertising. With our ever-emerging constant use of technology, marketing is incorporated into our everyday lives!

What will my courses be?

There are plenty of amazing courses that can be taken when majoring in Marketing. My all-time favourite course was BUSI 4280U - Social Media Marketing with Professor Nelson Amaral. We got to delve into topics surrounding the social media pages we use on a daily basis. For our final project, we were assigned a company that needed to implement a new strategy into its own marketing campaign. In groups, we analyzed the company and pitched a strategy of which social media applications to use as well as examples of the types of posts which would be most beneficial for the company’s overall marketing goals.

That's just one of the amazing courses which are offered within the Marketing major and there is always an interesting topic to learn about! Some other Marketing courses in this program include:

What experiential learning opportunities are there?

Within the Faculty of Business and IT there are six different types of opportunities for experiential learning. These include:

  • Capstone Projects
  • Entrepreneurship Program
  • Industry Placements
  • International Placements.
  • Paid Internships
  • Venture Creation Course

Personally, I get the opportunity to work on a Capstone project this upcoming semester. A capstone project gives you the opportunity to work with a business or organization within the Durham Region and gain valuable experience in your field of study. This gives you the opportunity to put theory and concepts into practice while experiencing real-world consulting.

What are the benefits of this program?

The marketing program provides knowledge to understand and engage consumers. This is done by developing marketing strategies, implementing and assessing marketing actions in different industries and competitive environments.

What can I do with this degree?

A degree in Marketing can give you many different career opportunities! Some examples include:

  • Advertising Executive
  • Digital Marketer
  • Marketing Analyst
  • Marketing Coordinator
  • Marketing Manager
  • Marketing Researcher
  • Social Media Manager

The Marketing program at Ontario Tech has given me outstanding knowledge and skills which I can implement in my future career. I am looking forward to my final year!
