Eligibility and requirements for international student scholarships

Bria Hughes

Ontario Tech is dedicated to your success, and we offer several scholarships for domestic and international students. You may be wondering, what are the requirements for international students to receive scholarships? Well, we're here to help you find out!

Below we will outline the general requirements for consideration and the various scholarships dedicated to international students:

General requirements

International students considering applying for scholarships should meet the following criteria:

  • Be an official Ontario Tech student or applicant.
  • Have not previously attended a university institution.
  • Do not already hold a scholarship, as you can only hold one at a time.
  • Must be enrolled in an 80 per cent course load (four courses) per term.
  • For entrance scholarships, you must attend our university within 18 months of high school graduation.

While these are the general requirements that determine eligibility, additional requirements for different scholarships should be kept in mind.

If you meet these general requirements, there are several different types of scholarships available to you as an international student that we will define next, along with their additional requirements.

International entrance scholarships

For most of our international entrance awards, you must be an international secondary-school student entering an undergraduate program at our university on a study permit. Meaning, you must currently study outside of Canada to apply; Canadian citizens and permit residents are not eligible for this award.

Global Leadership Award (GLA)

The GLA is one of our most prestigious awards offered to our students. This award recognizes your strong leadership and academic abilities. Valued at $72,000, this award provides recipients with $18,000 toward tuition each year, for four years.leadership written on chalkboard

Applications can be completed through MyOntarioTech under the Student awards and financial aid section. Be sure to have your application completed by the deadline—Wednesday, February 15.

International Leaders Award (ILA)

If you have completed an application for the GLA, you will also be considered for the ILA. This award recognizes your hard work in becoming a high-achieving international student. This one-year award is valued at $10,000 CAD, and if you are a recipient, you may be required to complete up to 40 hours of volunteer work per semester in the International Recruitment office.

To be considered for the ILA, you must have submitted your application for the GLA by the deadline of Wednesday, February 15.

International Merit Awards

These awards are valued at up to $4,000 CAD and automatically awarded to the applicants with the highest admission grade-point-average from each identified region. These Merit Awards are non-renewable.

To be considered, students must have submitted a complete application for admission, including any required supporting documentation by Wednesday, February 15.

English Learning Centre (ELC) Scholarships

If you're an international student that has successfully completed the ELC program of study and is entering an undergraduate program at the university on a study permit, you may be eligible for one of our ELC Scholarships.

These scholarships are valued at $1,000 CAD and will be awarded upon enrolment in the first year of an undergraduate program. The ELC Scholarships are one-time-only and are not renewable. Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and students receiving funding from a sponsor or third party are not eligible for this scholarship.

Awards of recognition

These scholarships are awarded to you based on your grade point average (GPA) for your best six 4U/4M high school courses. These awards are given to international students who graduated from a Canadian high school and are automatically applied to your tuition account.

  • $4,000 for an average of 95 per cent or higher
  • $2,000 for an average of 90 to 94.9 per cent
  • $1,000 for an average of 85 to 89.9 per cent

So, if you have a course or two that you didn’t do as well as you wanted to in, that doesn’t eliminate the possibility of receiving an award!

Awards for current international students

In-course scholarships

These awards are designated for international students currently studying at Ontario Tech. We want to recognize your achievements and hard work during your undergraduate studies. To be eligible, you must have achieved a 3.7 GPA or higher (on a 4.3 scale) during the previous academic year and return to a full-time course load. Additionally, you must have been enrolled in an 80 per cent course load in the previous academic year.

  • $ 1,500 for a 4.0 or higher GPA
  • $ 1,000 for 3.7 to 3.99 GPA

Note: you can receive this award for up to three years of your first undergraduate degree. Like the entrance scholarships, these awards are applied directly to your tuition account.

International Emergency Bursary

This bursary has been created for international students transferring to Canada due to war or environmental catastrophes. International Emergency bursaries are valued at $20,000 CAD each and are available to international students entering a full-time undergraduate or graduate program.

Each bursary is renewable annually for a maximum of four years, provided you are in good academic standing. The funds will be applied directly to offset the cost of your international tuition.

These awards demonstrate our dedication to supporting your academic goals and our recognition of your hard work and achievements. Hopefully, this overview will help you understand the requirements needed so you can begin applying to all the awards you are eligible for!
