Happy November students! I hope all of you are managing to stay warm and cozy in this colder weather we are beginning to have.
As the end of the school year approaches, I’m sure a lot of you are busy finishing off assignments and studying for finals tests.
With the new year approaching, you're likely thinking more about where to apply. Something you should consider when thinking of where to go to university are the available volunteer opportunities. As such, I thought this would be a good time to bring to your attention some possible volunteer opportunities available for students in the GTA.
Volunteering at organizations not only exposes you to the potential environment you may working in one day, but also looks fantastic on your resume and applications for further education.
There are endless volunteer opportunities available for students, whether that be positions at the university or in the community. This blog post will provide you with information regarding different volunteer positions in the community that are relevant to the faculty you are a part of. So, without further ado, let’s get started!
Faculty of Health Sciences
One of the places that is very popular for students in the Faculty of Health Sciences to volunteer at is Lakeridge Health Hospital located on Simcoe Street in Oshawa. The hospital offers a wide variety of positions available to students that are interested in working in the health care field.
As a student volunteer, you have the opportunity to assist in many different patient-focused departments, such as emergency, cancer centre, fracture clinic, cardiac rehabilitation, hospitality, endoscopy unit and so on. The hospital also offers volunteer positions in their gift shop and café as cashiers.
As a student in the Faculty of Health Sciences myself, and being interested in pursuing a career in medicine, I have volunteered with Lakeridge Health Oshawa over the past two years and have had an amazing experience. I have been able to network with many others and learn about other possible job opportunities in the health care field that I never knew existed before!
If you are a student interested in volunteering here, please check out the Lakeridge Health Oshawa website for the application process and upcoming deadlines.
Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science
As an engineering student, it can sometimes be more difficult to find a volunteer position as places tend to look for students to fill internships.
With that being that, a common and very rewarding volunteer position for engineers is with an organization known as FIRST Robotics Canada. This organization holds events for young children as well as high school students, where they team up with technology companies to build very impressive robots.
As a student, you can volunteer to be the younger students' mentor and lead their team to success. Volunteers who support the FIRST program events have the unique experience to watch the younger student participants learn, invent, cooperate and compete while having fun during the event.
This position allows you to be a mentor and at the same time allows you to demonstrate professionalism and organizational skills that look great on a resume! If you are interested in this opportunity, check out the FIRST Robotics Canada website for more information on how to apply.
Faculty of Science
If you have a passion for science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM), Let’s Talk Science is the organization for you! Let’s Talk Science is a charitable organization that focuses on education and outreach to support youth and child development.
As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to engage with Canadian youth in diverse STEM learning experiences in school and community settings. You will have the chance to work with children as young as three years old up until grade 12 youth, to deliver hands-on, mind stimulating activities on various topics.
The closet outreach site is located at right here at our university! If this is a volunteer position that sparks your interest, you can sign up online for more information.
Faculty of Social Science and Humanities
While the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities encompasses different programs that have a wide scope of career opportunities, Ontario Shores is a place that is able to be of benefit to this diverse group of students.
Located in Whitby, Ontario Shores offers many different departments that students have the option to volunteer in. These departments include the forensic program, geriatric program, family resource centre, drop-in centre, gift shop, information desk, research projects, events and spiritual care.
The forensic program mentioned above is a very common program that some of our own Forensic Psychology and Criminology students are a part of, where they get to interact with and observe the assessments, treatments and rehabilitation of patients who have come in contact with law enforcement.
Feel free to check out the Ontario Shores website for further information about their application process and deadlines.
Faculty of Business and Information Technology
With the Faculty of Business and Information Technology having very diverse programs and many volunteer opportunities being offered from the university for students, the best advice in terms of community involvement is to help small business owners or get involved in community events!
For instance, there are many small business owners that face challenges with new technology and trends. A great way for many business students to get involved and gain business experience is to try connecting with a business owner (of your choice!) and offer to help them with any social media marketing strategies, for example.
Another idea for business students is to get involved through volunteering at local community events, which allows you to gain experience and skills that you can further discuss at an interview.
Many business students will assist with events and take on roles such as calling residents for feedback or registering runners at marathons, which all can be used as experience to display developed sales and business administration skills.
To find community events to volunteer at, you can use a Volunteer Match website, which allows you to search all local events that are in need of some extra assistance.
Well, there you have it, some of the most popular places that students of the university choose to spend their spare time giving back to the community while also boosting their resume.
I wish you all the best of luck with your upcoming exams and hope that some of you are now inspired to start a volunteer position to kick off 2019!
